You’ve started your own company. You’re busy attending leads
groups, developing marketing materials and doing whatever it takes
to get the word out about your company. The first six months are
rough. You ask yourself, did I make the right decision? What was I
thinking? And, miraculously enough, with one package of hot dogs
left in the freezer, you land a client. A BIG client. Now you can
breathe a little easier.
Things start happening. You land another client and then another.
The phone is ringing and it’s not a telemarketer. You’re starting
to get referrals. You may even need to hire another person! And
then one day you realize that “tax day” is upon you. You must now
admit the shameful truth: All your receipts are stuffed inside
three big, giant, overstuffed envelopes.
You choose a CPA from one of your leads groups. You call her on
April 7. She sounds stressed. She tells you she can do it, but
because you haven’t kept your books all year long, it’s going to
cost you $8,000. You think you have a bad connection, but she
repeats, “$8,000”. She tells you that if you had only hired a
bookkeeper to manage your books all year long, you would have
saved thousands of dollars. She will have to charge you for
sorting out this mess. It’s a lot of hours of work — for both of
you.
When it’s all over, she looks at you like you’ve been a badly
behaved five-year-old and hands you a business card. “Call Craig,”
she says. “Craig Clossen.” The card is black with gold letters and
